The Weekly Minute - Dec. 23, 2022

Merry Christmas (to those who celebrate) and Happy Holidays to all! I truly hope you have a chance to reset and enjoy some quality time with family.

Let’s get on with this week:

What I’ve Read This Week

  • Why You Have Too Many Meetings (via Braden Kowitz)

    • If you work at a large or growing company, you’ll eventually face the problem of too many meetings. It’s a common, yet tricky villain. Too many meetings will quietly suck away productivity by breaking everyone’s day into little chunks and robbing everyone of deep work.

    • So if you have too many meetings at your company, consider the following questions.

      • Are roles and responsibilities clear?

      • Do people know what’s happening?

      • Are you doing too much at the same time?

      • Do people trust each other?

  • Marketing’s moment is now: The C-suite partnership to deliver on growth (via McKinsey)

    • Marketing’s big opportunity is here. CEOs are turning to marketing to drive their company’s growth agenda, and they’re giving CMOs the runway and support to do so.

  • “I spend too much at Starbucks” (via Trung Phan)

    • This quote is not an accident: the coffee retailer -- worth $120B -- uses many psychological hacks in its store and menu designs to get you to drop more cash.

    • Here are 11 of them

A New Framework

The Picasso Principle

There's a story about the famous artist, Pablo Picasso – that may or may not have actually happened.

It seems a woman came up to him at a restaurant and asked him to sketch something on a napkin. He sketched it, and gave it back to her saying: “That will cost you $10,000”.

She was astounded. “You took just five minutes to do the sketch,” she said. Isn't $10,000 a lot for five minutes work?

“No,” Picasso said. “It has taken me forty years to do that.”

For people of that caliber, the years of experience and skill (and experimentation) that has been developed outweigh the labor of that particular moment or creation. Everything in the past has added up to that moment.

A tremendously valuable lesson and reminder, whether the actual conversation occurred or not.

Healthcare Corner

Rising Stars: 104 healthcare leaders to know (via Becker’s)

I love reading and studying leaders of all ages, including those rising stars. Becker’s has published this list of emerging leaders in healthcare –  those who are focused on accessibility, affordability and increasing the patient experience.

Sports Corner

Congrats to Lionel Messi and Argentina for winning the World Cup! I was personally rooting for France, but it’s pretty cool to see a nation like Argentina win sports’ greatest championship — and to see one of the greats win for his country.
