The Weekly Minute - November 26, 2023
Happy Thanksgiving weekend! I hope you all have been able to spend quality time with family, friends and/or whoever makes you feel grateful.
I hope you enjoyed the turkey, stuffing, cranberries – and, of course, the football.
I sure am.
p.s. GO BLUE! Michigan beat Ohio State for the third straight year. ;)
What I Read This Week
What Is FOPO? This Harmful Mental Cycle Could Be Holding You Back (via Michael Gervais, Katie Couric Media)
My good friend, Dr. Michael Gervais, shares his thoughts on opinons – with a book he recently published.
You’ve heard of FOMO… but what about FOPO? Gervais says it’s a phenomenon that’s running rampant in our society, and it could be plaguing you right now: Fear of people’s opinions.
In his new book, The First Rule of Mastery, Gervais calls FOPO “a hidden epidemic” that “may be the single greatest constrictor of human potential.” As Gervais explains, “Our concern with what other people think about us has become an irrational, unproductive, and unhealthy obsession in the modern world. And its negative effects reach into all aspects of our lives.”
One Quote
A timely one, via Sam Altman: 'Give yourself a lot of shots to get lucky’ is even better advice than it appears on the surface. Luck isn’t an independent variable but increases super-linearly w/ more surface area - you meet more people, make more connections between new ideas, learn patterns, etc.”
On Luck
The surface area of luck increases if you get more shots on goal, you’re well-positioned (changes in environment, ability to endure pain, etc.), you have a long time horizon, you have access to a network of successful people, and you mix curiosity, energy, and integrity. (from Farnam Street)
See you in a few days for my next update.
