The Weekly Minute - March 22, 2024

It’s Madness, ya’ll.

How about Rochester, Michigan-based Oakland University!? The Golden Grizzlies took the nation by storm last night on the back of Jack Gohlke’s 10 three-pointers and Greg Kampe, who has coached there for 40 years.

That’s why we love it.

You’re Only As Good As Your Worst Day

Via Farnam Street

  • We tend to measure performance by what happens when things are going well. Yet how people, organizations, companies, leaders, and other things do on their best day isn’t all that instructive.

  • To find the truth, we need to look at what happens on the worst day.

  • We can see the similarities in all walks of life, and I start to align that with the game of golf. The pros are great, not because they make great shots (which they do), but because they have fewer mistakes, fewer “blow-up” holes, and manage those mistakes really well.

6 Insights on Consumer Preferences in Healthcare

Via Advisory Board

Consumers weigh several priorities, including access, convenience, cost, quality, and experience, when deciding where — or if — to seek care. As care providers compete on these priorities, here is a snapshot of the status quo from which they'll need to differentiate themselves, says Advisory Board:

  1. Access is the No. 1 differentiator.

  2. Retail clinics are uniquely poised to deliver on convenience.

  3. Gen Z is more apt to visit urgent care than a primary care physician.

  4. Telehealth’s growth opportunity lies with repeat users.

  5. Convenient access and navigability are table stakes.

  6. Enhanced communication can alleviate dissatisfaction.

Don’t Let Perfectionism Slow You Down

Via Harvard Business Review

  • HBR provides a few helpful tips on how avoid perfectionism — which can be counterprdocuvit in many situations. A few of their recomendated strateegies:

  • Use the effort-to-benefit ratio: Before undertaking any new project, it’s important to do an accurate pre-assessment of the effort involved and compare that to the potential benefits.

  • Learn how to start: Perfectionistic concerns have been linked to procrastination in some studies. The thought of having to turn in a perfect article or analysis can lead to stress and anxiety, and task avoidance is one way to deal with these emotions. Be accepting of imperfect drafts. Once you complete an imperfect first draft, it’s much easier to iterate for better later drafts.

  • Learn how to finish: Learning how to say that a project or report is completed and ready to be released can be challenging if you’re aiming for perfection, but it is a vital skill. One way to do that is to seek early feedback on your tasks.

Impactul Quote

Writer and Nobel Prize winner Gabriel García Márquez on what matters in life:

“What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it.”

My Thought for the Weekend

  • Similar to the perfectionism theory above, there is this illusion of the "right" moment:

    • "Do not wait; the time will never be just right. Start where you stand, and work with whatever tools you may have at your command, and better tools will be found as you go along." - George Herbert

  • If you wait to feel prepared, you'll never start.

  • Don't wait, just act.

Leaving You With One Amazing Video

  • As one of just a few fans of the Minnesota Timberwolves, I had to share this Anthony Edwards POSTER that you probably already saw.

  • Ant is only 22-years old and the future face of the NBA. The guy is so electric and has such an incredible charisma.
