The Weekly Minute - Dec. 2, 2022
I’m going to make this short and sweet this week, due to flu in the family this week and cross-country travel today.
What I’ve Read This Week
1,000 True Fans (via The Technium)
This is an oldie (originally published in 2008!), but a goodie.
“To be a successful creator you don’t need millions,” argues The Technium. “You don’t need millions of dollars or millions of customers, millions of clients or millions of fans. To make a living as a craftsperson, photographer, musician, designer, author, animator, app maker, entrepreneur, or inventor you need only thousands of true fans.”
“A true fan is defined as a fan that will buy anything you produce. These diehard fans will drive 200 miles to see you sing; they will buy the hardback and paperback and audible versions of your book; they will purchase your next figurine sight unseen; they will pay for the “best-of” DVD version of your free youtube channel; they will come to your chef’s table once a month. If you have roughly a thousand of true fans like this (also known as super fans), you can make a living — if you are content to make a living but not a fortune.”
5 Must-Read Books to Gain a Basic Understanding of U.S. Healthcare (via Jared Dashevsky)
In my constant quest to learn more about the healthcare space, I love seeing new things to read. Credit for this all goes to Jared, who dropped this Twitter thread earlier this week.
Life Lessons (via James Clear)
James has this post on some essential life lesosns, including:
Lesosns from famous creators
Lessons on living a meantinful life
Three life lessons from his own life
A random assortment of other articles on life lessons
One Quote
“Ask yourself at every moment, 'Is this necessary?’” ― Marcus Aurelius
Healthcare Corner
The Scheduling Conundrum, via Health Tech Stack
“Direct scheduling remains an enigma, wrapped in a mystery, surrounded by a conundrum. Why?”
A couple of few quotes:
Without digital interactions that they can access 24/7, businesses are distinctly disadvantaging themselves against their competition.
Systems and smiles: the success of every business depends on both. If you run a car repair business, customers want polite service, a comfortable waiting area, and potable coffee–but they also want their engine trouble diagnosed correctly. If you manage a cruise ship, you need an engaging crew and enjoyable on-board activities, but you also need to maintain your lifeboats.
Sports Central
Last week was incredible for the Brian Wagner sports teams.
USC - A giant win for my alma mater over Notre Dame to propel the Trojans a game away from the College Football Playoff. A win vs. Utah in the Pac-12 Championship will get the Trojans in their first ever CFP! Fight On!
Michigan - An enourmaous win at Ohio State (first time since 2000) to give the Wolverines the Big Tean East crown and a date vs. Purdue in teh Big Ten Championship. Go Blue!
Vikings - A fun, exciting win on Thanksgiving night vs. the Patriots! A 9-2 record and still rolling. SKOL!
USA - After a frustrating draw to Wales in the first game, a draw vs. England and win vs. Iran propelled the Americans to the Round of 16 in the World Cup! GO USA!
