The Weekly Minute - March 1, 2024

Happy March!

Spring. College Hoops. This is a great month.

Now, onto what I want to share for this week.

What I Read

  • 17 Thoughts About Money (via A Wealth of Common Sense)

    • This is some “money stuff” that  Ben Carlson has been thinking about. I wanted to provide a few of the really good ones here:

    • 1. Freedom is overrated as a financial goal. There are plenty of billionaires who can do whatever they want, whenever they want and spend as much money as they want. Many of these people still seem miserable or don’t take advantage of their perceived freedom. Financial contentment is a better goal than financial freedom.

    • 4. Outsourcing is money well spent. Time is a finite resource. Outsourcing services to people or businesses that have more expertise or resources than you is a good investment if it saves you time or stress.

    • 10. The best perspective about money comes from past versions of yourself. It’s impossible to keep up with all of the Joneses because the more wealth you accumulate, the more wealthy people you’re exposed to.

    • I find it helpful to look back at my own past to find gratitude when it comes to my financial picture.

    • 11. Enjoying your job is a form of wealth. I can’t quantify this, but I know it’s true — there are more wealthy people in America than those who love what they do for work. I know plenty of rich people who constantly complain about their jobs. The hours. The responsibilities. The stress. Their boss. It’s hard to put a price on an enjoyable work environment.

  • Customers Could Stop Doing Business Because Of A Long Survey (via Shep Hyken)

    • BEWARE: Long surveys. While it's important to collect important feedback, it can scare off many customers.

      • 67% of customers said they don’t complete surveys if they are too long.

      • And 19% of customers stopped doing business with a brand because its surveys were too long.

Healthcare

  • A Michelin Guide for Patient Experience - Part One: The Kitchen Sets the Tone (via CareOps)

    • Delightful customer service — whether in fine dining or healthcare — begins with great operations.

    • This is a great piece that brings into focus the importance of a great experience and how it comes together.

    • "Through the lens of a Michelin-star restaurant — the North Star of great customer experience — it’s clear that great outcomes are driven by thoughtful, human-centered design, flexible standardization, and reduction of cognitive burden.

Cool Visual

  • The Big Map of Who Lived When (via Reddit)

    • The overlapping lives of historical figures, from 1200 to present

A Thought for the Weekend

  • Forget credit. Just do the work. And perhaps: find canvases for other people to paint on.
