The Weekly Minute - May 31, 2024
We’re getting into the summer! Schools are winding down for the year, the warmth is here and the sun is out until after 9pm (at least here in Michigan).
It’s a logical feeling, but summer does make me begin to think about recharging.
Summer isn't a reward, it's a biological necessity. Schedule downtime like a non-negotiable meeting. Soak up some Vitamin D, experiment with a mini-retirement, or just sleep in – if you can. (As a dad of three under 6, I certainly cannot sleep in. ;) )
Recharging your internal battery isn't a luxury, it's strategic fuel for the fall. A leader who prioritizes strategic rest is a leader who gets more out of themself and their team.
p.s. My Timberwolves were eliminated from the NBA Playoffs last night. While it was a tough night, I’m super proud of the season they had. Up from here!
p.p.s. I’m still exploring a re-brand of this weekly blog/newsletter. Stay tuned. 👀
Energetic people
Energy ignites and optimism propels. In a world where challenges are a constant, the power of energetic and optimistic individuals cannot be overstated. Energetic and optimistic people don't just dream; they do. Their positivity isn't just a mood—it's a strategy, a unique approach to problem-solving that involves seeing potential where others see dead ends.
While skills and expertise are invaluable, the energy and optimism of a team leader or member can be the difference between a project that stumbles and one that soars. It's the spark that ignites teamwork, drives innovation, and overcomes inevitable setbacks.
But here's the twist: energy and optimism are infectious. A single positive force within a team can elevate everyone's performance, transform workplace culture, and turn an average project into a groundbreaking success. Encourage the optimists. Fuel the energy-driven. Together, we can achieve the extraordinary. ⭐️
101 pieces of advice
I’ve pulled a few of my favorites…. But there are 101 pieces of golf here:
Admitting that “I don’t know” at least once a day will make you a better person
Whenever you hug someone, be the last to let go.
Multitasking is a myth. Don’t text while walking, running, biking or driving. Nobody will miss you if you just stop for a minute.
You can become the world’s best in something primarily by caring more about it than anyone else.
Don’t fear failure. Fear average.
For steady satisfaction, work on improving your worst days, rather than your best days.
To tell a good story, you must reveal a surprise; otherwise it is just a report.
Work on your tone. Often ideas are rejected because of the tone of voice they are wrapped in. Humility covers many blemishes.

Are you hunting antelope or field mice?
Tim uses the analogy of a lion hunting antelope vs. field mice to illustrate the importance of focusing on high-impact tasks.
While small tasks (mice) can provide a sense of accomplishment, they ultimately don't provide enough value (calories) to thrive.
This suggests various strategies to identify your "antelope" tasks, the ones that will have the biggest impact and free up the most energy.
A reminder for the weekend
Perfection is productivity’s nemesis.
If you’re an active reader/follower of mine, you’ll know this is a pillar of my professional philosophy. While good quality work matters, striving for absolute perfection can actually slow you down in the long run. There's a point where the extra effort to make something slightly better takes more time than the benefit it provides.
